It seems that the Nana Global Love Project is back on track again, so maybe I should remake that signup and rules page… though I sort of suspect that readership is now so small that this kind of thing can be managed casually on the forum. Just post in a thread and ask for Nana and explain why you deserve to get her. Sar wil decide who to send her to. If Sar chooses you, Nana stays with you for two weeks, then you mail her out to someone of your choosing.

Translation and Talk

Metal Fist is going to be either awesome or horrible. I can’t tell which, yet.

Basically, I’m fed up with moe. Moeblobs. Tsunderes. Blind girls, deaf girls. Older, younger and sick moe sisters. Borderline “are they, aren’t they” lesbians. Girls with glasses, vampires, mechanical girls, dolls, school girls, harem shows, retarded towns filled with retarded down-syndrome girls with MAGICAL RAINBOW MIRACLES that can only be brought about with HOT DICKINGS. I’m sick of it all.

Anyway. There’s plenty of good stuff out there (like Nijigahara Holograph, for example) but not nearly enough of it. I’ve been wondering if injecting some of that sensibility into otherwise tired genres can save them…

I’m going to try a bit of an experiment with Metal Fist. I’m going to see if I can take the two most moe genres (’magical girls’ and ‘harem’), strip out the moe, the fail, flip off the usual limits and devices (turn up the violence levels, turn off world-saving, turn off the existence of human-centric saviors and enemies, costumes, transformations, fated encounters, magical wands, fighting to save the people, etc.) and then inject some hate and grit and see if I can’t turn it into something good.

It’ll work is this: I’ll pretend it’s a real series and make two chapter-long releases: one from the middle of the first imagined season and one from the middle of an imagined sequel. The meat of the story isn’t very important in this case — the point of the experiment is to see if the broad outline of the thing has any potential value. If it does, and the flavour of the thing is fresh, we’ll have something interesting on our hands. If not, we’ll have an awesome pile of epic fail available for Solomon’s pleasure.

After (and in-between) Metal Fist, we have:
1. A story about a mother on a supernatural guilt trip
2. Two girls on a boat in the arctic in the distant future
3. A (surprisingly not-100%-depressing) nostalgia piece
4. Maria’s Sea in 3 parts (which has morphed into a sad mother/daughter piece)
5. Something that’s best described as a “shut-in fairy tale”, I guess.
6. A short mermaid/abuse story with a Lovecraftian flavour
7. A few other shorts

Well. That’s where we stand for 2008. Look forward to it. Or not.
